$7bn development around Chicago’s United Center launches

The privately funded undertaking will create a mixed-use entertainment destination, with plans including a new 6,000-capacity theatre

Ground has been broken on Chicago’s 1901 Project, a $7 billion (€6bn) undertaking to redevelop the areas surrounding the 23,500-capacity United Center, creating a mammoth mixed-use entertainment destination.

Initially introduced in 2024, the project will include a 6,000-capacity theatre, nearly 10,000 apartments, hotels, extensive retail and office spaces, parking garages, and public gathering spots on a 55-acre plot around the arena.

The multibillion-dollar initiative is being led by the venue’s co-owners, the Reinsdorf and Wirtz families, who are also the respective owners of the venue’s sporting tenants, the Chicago Bulls NBA team and Chicago Blackhawks NHL team.
