It’s a long way to the top – especially if you’re a loudmouth kid from the provincial Tasmanian town of Launceston. For Michael Chugg, there was no ladder to climb, so he built the scaffolding for Australia’s modern live music industry himself.

Today, the man known simply as Chuggi is one of the last true larrikins. His wild story and enduring influence are best understood by taking the advice given to one of his fresh-faced interns: “You will need to be very comfortable with smoking and swearing.” Unafraid to give both barrels to misbehaving audiences and disgruntled police chiefs alike, Chugg has toured everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Elton John.
