Two Canadian music rights orgs join to streamline royalties

In a move aimed at streamlining music royalties in Canada, leading performing rights organisation SOCAN has acquired the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA), bringing the country’s two main music rights organisations under one umbrella.

With the acquisition from SoundExchange, SOCAN – the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada – will add mechanical rights administration to its existing performance rights and international royalty services. CMRRA will continue as a standalone unit while benefiting from SOCAN’s resources and network.
