The Treaty of Tordesillas – the 1494 agreement by which Spain and Portugal divided up exploration rights to the new world – is a remarkably ambitious contract, “granting” most of North and South America to Spain and assigning Brazil, Africa, and Asia to its smaller neighbour.

Portugal’s impact has diminished a little since those days, yet it still punches above its weight. Its language is spoken by over 260m – the legacy of the Age of Exploration – and, for a nation of not quite 11m, it remains a pretty hot live…
