In June, Herman Schueremans, founder of Rock Werchter and MD of Live National Belgium, told IQ that Belgium risked being “wiped off the concert map” if a new state-of-the-art stadium was not built in the country. Without it, he argued, major acts would simply bypass Belgium on their stadium tours, and the country would be economically and culturally poorer.
Speaking to us for the Global Promoters Report, he was less existential this time around, giving the live music business in the country a favourable prognosis. “The market is healthy,” he says.
“Live shows, for both international and local acts, continue to grow, and shows are selling out faster than ever.” He did add, echoing his calls for a new stadium, that the summer months in the country are not being maximised as much as they could be due to a dearth of suitable venues. “There’s an opportunity for more mid-size venues, as well as a stadium with availability during the summer months,” he argues.
