In Singapore, venue updates come from the top: it was prime minister Lawrence Wong, delivering his maiden National Day Rally speech in August last year, who revealed that the city-state’s as-yet unnamed new arena in Kallang (initial plans for which were disclosed the previous March) would have a capacity of 18,000.

The new facility will be part of the government’s “Kallang Alive Masterplan.” The district already contains the existing 4,000–12,000-cap Singapore Indoor Stadium. Wong outlined both a new lifestyle and entertainment destination and a training and performance base for Team Singapore athletes.

“The Indoor Stadium is already 35 years old and no longer meets the requirements of today’s sporting and entertainment events,” he said. “So the first idea is to build a new indoor arena at this location. It will have a capacity of 18,000 – bigger than the current indoor stadium – so we can host more top-tier events here, and our athletes can compete on home ground.”
