Taking its name from a legendary Hungarian boxer, László Papp Budapest Sports Arena is one of Central Europe’s key stops for touring artists and entertainment, although it now faces stiff competition from the MVM Dome (which opened in 2022, capacity 20,028).
General manager Tibor Lak says the arena’s financial performance in 2024 was “better than expected” and that it has started 2025 very strongly, with 15% higher audience numbers compared with the same period in 2024.
“Even though locals’ purchase power is limited, and it’s challenging to choose from such a wide selection,” he explains, “most of our [upcoming] shows, including Jean-Michel Jarre and two sold-out Iron Maiden concerts, are proving highly popular.”
As with many modern arenas, the ability to reconfigure the layout for different events has proven key to its success, allowing it to host everything from musicals and theatre, such as Hair and Romeo and Juliet, through to major touring artists and sporting events.
