A rolling issue in the UK is the push to have a levy applied to ticket sales for shows at arenas and stadiums that is then funnelled down into grassroots venues, many of which are under threat of closure. In late 2024, following the Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee’s report on grassroots music venues, Sir Chris Bryant, the creative industries minister, called on the UK live business to collectively introduce a voluntary levy on all stadium and arena tickets to aid grassroots venues, festivals, artists, and promoters.
This is an issue that will be debated throughout 2025 and will shape how the arena and stadium businesses evolve here, especially given that the LIVE trade body says the concert sector (and associated businesses) contributed £6.1bn to the British economy in 2023.
